Specialist Re-entry Program for Anaesthetists
|
This program assists specialist anaesthetists returning to specialist practice after extended leave. The curriculum is based on quality improvement methodology, the components including: educational consultation, development of learning/professional development portfolios, simulation-based training, simulation-based peer appraisal, supervised clinical placements, mentors and guidance with optional activities tailored to the specialist's professional development needs.

Achieving better integrated care and use of clinical guidelines in acute rural paediatric practice.
|
The project's goals are to improve care of children with acute serious conditions and improve adherence to best practice guidelines by rural specialists and their teams. The activities are three pronged: (1) Simulation courses for 72 specialists focus on rehearsal of serious conditions, decision-making, multi-professional teamwork and human factors (2) Videoconference educational sessions for specialists and their broader teams focus on better use of clinical guidelines and (3) an Independent Quality Assurance activity focuses on improving outcomes and reducing risks in paediatric practice.

Building Capacity in Rural Facilities to Undertake Paediatric Team Training
|
Round 7 builds on work conducted in Round 6, training a further 72 specialists who have targeted needs, including rural anaesthetists and specialists working in isolated or under challenging conditions. In Round 7, we also conduct pilot training in a rural setting, aimed at mentoring rural facilities to develop infrastructure to host simulation training to the local health community.

Trauma team training
|
This project trains health professionals involved in frontline trauma management in the principles of teamwork. A total of 120 health professionals from tertiary, outer metropolitan and rural NSW hospitals will be trained between 2006 and 2008. In 2009 the SMSC will, in addition, provide train-the-trainer support and off-site training in rural facilities within NSW.

Paediatric team training
|
This project trains multi-professional teams from paediatric emergency and intensive care departments in a simulated environment to respond effectively to emergencies, develop effective teamwork and communicate effectively. In 2008 the SMSC will, in addition, assist rural facilities to establish on-site simulation training. By the end of this round, 200 staff, along with thirty instructors, will have received training.
