Definition: learning technologies are used as a platform from which to conduct a clinical procedure. Task trainers and virtual reality systems are technologies commonly used to support procedural task training, although patient simulators are generally required for difficult intubation training.

Suitable for the following competencies: basic, advanced and specialized procedural clinical skills training.

Basic procedural tasks:

  • Urinary catheterisation
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Plaster application


Advanced procedural tasks:

  • Endotracheal intubation
  • Difficult intubation
  • Defibrillation and cardioversion
  • Central venous catheterization
  • Intercostal catheter
  • Joint aspiration


Specialised procedural tasks:

  • Abdominal ultrasound examination of a trauma patient
  • Field visualization or knot tying during abdominal laparoscopy
  • Insertion of a lumbar epidural for labour analgesia
  • Fibreoptic bronchoscopy

Format: A workshop format is used where one to two instructors facilitate a group of up to six participants who have individual hands-on access to a technology such as task trainer or VR system.

How its run: Facilitators follow a structure consisting of: Introduction, Goal setting, Demonstration, Practice, Feedback, Questions and discussion, Close.
